Technology Advisory Committee Update: April 25, 2023
April 24, 2023
During the final technology advisory committee meeting of the 2022-23 school year, the committee reviewed feedback from last month's technology skills matrix survey sent out to elementary school teachers to help determine what technology skills each grade should know before starting the start of the school year, and what they should learn during the year.
Members broke into three groups, K-1, 2-3, and 4-5. After meeting in small groups, the groups reconvened to discuss what each had come up with.
The committee agreed that prior to starting kindergarten, it is best to assume that each child will come in as a blank slate, with the understanding that some students may have more advanced knowledge prior to starting school. By the time students finish kindergarten, students should have a grasp of basic iPad skills. As students move through first, second, and third grades, students should begin to understand the basics of keyboard skills and Google Suite, approaching more complex functions as they move through fourth and fifth grade.
After reviewing the feedback, the district will now move forward with creating the matrix, creating lessons, and putting committee suggestions in place. Next year during the spring, the committee will review the matrix to see what needs to be added, removed, or improved upon.
After the meeting, the committee recognized and thanked members who have completed their time on the committee. An application for potential new committee members is expected to be sent out in June.
