Teaching and Learning Committee Update: Feb. 28, 2023

Feburary 28, 2023

During this month's Teaching and Learning Board Advisory Committee meeting, Dr. Craig Hamby, Executive Director of Elementary Education, and Dr. Sarah Valter, Literacy Coordinator, shared the timeline for elementary literacy resource selection which began in the 2021-22 school year and was continued into this year due to pandemic-related supply chain issues.

Having the pilot process this school year allowed the district to fully implement the various resources and gauge the impact on student learning.  The materials being piloted for K-5 learning align with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's literacy expectations and have been vetted through multiple states and educational researchers as effective programs.

  • K-5 Pilots:  Collaborative Classroom and Benchmark Advance
  • K-2 Pilots:  Amplify CLKA and Superkids
  • 3-5 Pilots:  Bookworms
A decision-making matrix that includes teacher feedback, observational data, program reviews, and student growth data is being used in order to make a recommendation to the Board of Education in May.

The Teaching and Learning Board Advisory gave input on the selection process, identifying areas where clarity was needed as well as what and how to communicate the process to the community.

The next meeting will be held March 28, 2023.
