Teaching and Learning Committee Update: Jan. 10, 2023

Jan. 10, 2023

During the first meeting of 2023, the Teaching and Learning committee members discussed health curriculum standards.

Committee members were asked to provide their input to define which of the standards should be prioritized at each grade level. Dr. Ronni Zagora explained to committee members the process of reviewing the curriculum with staff, including looking at survey data and trends in youth health, reviewing standards at the state and national levels, and reviewing district policies and state law.

The committee reviewed the policies currently in place in the district. Currently, board policies include sexual health instruction and instruction about drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. High schoolers are also required to receive instruction in both CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver.

The committee was split into three small groups, focusing on elementary, middle, and high school standards. Each group shared out what they felt were the most important standards. Examples include social media use, vaping, and reflection on things learned in middle and elementary school.

The committee's next meeting will be held Feb. 21, 2023.
