Six Flyers Named National Merit Semifinalists

Sept. 20, 2022

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently announced that six Lindbergh High School students have been named semifinalists in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. Approximately 16,000 students earned the honor nationwide.

National Merit Semifinalists are high school seniors who show exceptional skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Lindbergh’s honorees include Benjamin Koberlein, Chinmay Kumar, Nathan Liebetreu, Douglas Sachs, Madison Sweet and Cooper Terrill.

These students entered the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents fewer than 1% of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest scoring individuals in each state. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,250 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million that will be offered next spring.

LHS Principal Dr. Eric Cochran said that he is proud and excited to have six students representing Lindbergh High School.

“I could not be more proud of these six students,” Cochran said. “This achievement is the result of the significant dedication they have to learning at the highest levels, both inside and outside of the classroom. This recognition is also a result of those who have helped them, especially their families. Each student represents the best of Lindbergh, and each has bright futures ahead of them."

National Merit Scholarship winners of 2023 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join nearly 368,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.
