Board Approves No-Tax-Rate-Increase Bond Issue

January 22, 2019

The Lindbergh Schools Board of Education voted on Jan. 15 to place a no-tax-rate-increase bond issue on the April 2 ballot to improve safety and security for all Lindbergh students. Prop R is a $105 million no-tax-rate-increase bond issue proposal. This means that the district’s current debt service tax rate of .833 will not change.

If approved, Prop R will:

  • Renovate and rebuild Lindbergh High School to create a safe, future-ready campus with a single, secure main entrance
  • Ensure all Lindbergh schools have secure main entrances by constructing entry vestibules at three elementary and two middle schools
  • Move three maintenance and landscape shops off the LHS campus

Lindbergh has used the “Prop R” title for previous no-tax-rate-increase bond issues in 2006 and 2008 to signify renewal, reconstruction and rebuilding. If approved, the 2019 version of Prop R would help make Lindbergh Schools safe, secure and ready for the future.

“It is imperative in today’s world that we provide secure, safe facilities for all of our Lindbergh students and staff,” said Superintendent Dr. Tony Lake. “In addition to providing an outstanding educational experience, our number one priority for every Lindbergh child we serve is to keep them safe while they are in our care.”

Lindbergh High School

Lindbergh High School’s open campus design is outdated and unsafe, with more than 60 sets of exterior doors in all, and a student pedestrian area that mixes with incoming vehicular traffic. Prop R would create a single, secure point of entry, in addition to flexible, future-ready space that meets the needs of teachers and students today and for decades to come. If approved, a new high school will be built on the existing campus, using new construction to connect several of the existing structures. Buildings in most need of serious repairs would be demolished. The original building at LHS is close to 70 years old, and major mechanical systems campuswide are in need of total replacement.

Safe, Secure Entrances Districtwide

Five of Lindbergh’s 11 schools currently feature secure entrances with two sets of locked doors. In addition, Lindbergh Early Childhood Education is the first Lindbergh campus to use a visitor management system to screen guests. If approved, Prop R will create safe entrances  districtwide and put in place consistent safety protocols that align with national best practices:

  • All exterior doors remain locked
  • Visitors ring a doorbell, and state their name and purpose of visit prior to entry
  • Visitors are routed through a secure vestibule with two sets of locked doors, and must check in at the main office before entering student areas
  • Office staff uses visitor management system to scan each visitor’s driver’s license, confirm identity, and flag any causes for alert

“In addition to providing a flexible, future-ready space that will serve generations of high school students in our community, Prop R also will ensure that Lindbergh facilities are meeting best practices for safety standards to keep our children safe,” said Board President Karen Schuster. “All of these things make the Lindbergh district an attractive location for families, which keeps home values strong and strengthens our community as a whole.”
