Membership in the National Honor Society (NHS) is one of the highest honors a high school student can achieve. Our chapter of NHS works hard to recognize outstanding students and bring their accomplishments to the attention of parents, teachers, peers, and the community. No student is inducted based solely on high academic achievement. The selection criteria include scholarship (a 3.5 weighted GPA), leadership, service, and character, as demonstrated through the Candidate Selection Application and teacher evaluations. NHS seeks to recognize the well-rounded student who excels in all of these areas.
The Four Pillars of NHS:
SCHOLARSHIP – Current 10/11th grade students must have a weighted cumulative GPA of 3.5 by January to qualify as candidates. Members are required to maintain this GPA to remain active.
SERVICE – Candidates will be selected based on their community service hours. After selection, members must continue participating in NHS and non-NHS service activities to maintain membership, completing at least 14 hours of service each year.
LEADERSHIP – Candidates will be evaluated on leadership roles and participation in extracurricular activities. Members earn "drive points" by organizing, contributing to, or participating in NHS service drives.
CHARACTER – Candidates must exhibit good character, which will be assessed through teacher recommendations and a writing prompt. Members must uphold the Six Pillars of Character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship.
Membership is not just an honor but an ongoing commitment to exemplify NHS’s four pillars. Students must maintain a 3.5 weighted GPA and serve the school and community through their leadership, service, and character. Each member contributes to the chapter’s impact and effectiveness by actively engaging.
To maintain membership and earn the honor of wearing a gold cord at graduation, students must:
-
Attend two meetings per month during Power Lunch.
-
Pay annual dues of $20.
-
Earn two drive points per year, either by participating in NHS drives or developing new ideas.
-
Complete a minimum of 14 hours of community service, including 6 hours within the Lindbergh community and 8 hours outside of school.
