About AVID

  • AVID, which stands for "Advancement Via Individual Determination," is a program at Lindbergh High School that is designed to help students prepare for college success by providing them with the necessary academic skills, study strategies, and support to succeed in rigorous coursework.

AVID is offered as a one-credit elective course offered during 9th, 10th and 11th grade. AVID elective courses are year-long college and career readiness courses that emphasize the skills and attributes necessary to succeed in rigorous high school coursework. Students will focus on strategies for success in reading, writing, inquiry, collaboration, and organizational skills. The courses also provide academic, social, and emotional support for students to succeed in their other classes.

    AVID course goals include:

    • Focus on college readiness: The primary goal of AVID is to prepare students for college by teaching them essential study habits, critical thinking skills, and how to navigate challenging academic courses.

    • Target student population: AVID often targets students who are academically in the middle range, demonstrating a desire to attend college but might need extra support to achieve their goals.

    • Classroom strategies: AVID utilizes specific teaching methods like collaborative learning, Socratic seminars, and peer tutoring to foster active engagement and deeper understanding.

    • Social and emotional support: Beyond academics, AVID aims to provide students with the social and emotional support needed to navigate the challenges of higher education.

Students can apply for the program, or may be identified for the program by teachers and counselors based on academic, social, and emotional attributes. Please contact the LHS Counseling Office for more information.
