Students in Tayla Drowns’ fourth grade class at Long Elementary School raised $500 this year to donate to the St. Louis Aquarium.
“Our goal was to create a classroom of empathetic learners and upcoming leaders,” Drowns said of the project.
The students gathered donations during monthly schoolwide spirit days, such as “slipper day” and “hat day,” where students in the school could make a donation of 50 cents to participate.

Once the students reached their $500 goal, they took a class field trip to the St. Louis Aquarium, touring the facility and participating in a variety of activities. The field trip was funded entirely by a local nonprofit organization.
Student Donates Hair to Help Cancer Patients
Long Elementary School student Julia Crowe kicked off her spring break with a new shorter hairstyle, and a heart for service as well. Julia grew her hair for several months before cutting off 11 inches for the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program. Pantene Beautiful Lengths is a program to provide wigs to women battling cancer. This is the second time Julia has donated her hair; the first time was at the end of her kindergarten year.
Disney Dress Up Day Helps Make a Wish Come True
Lindbergh students at Kennerly Elementary School, Lindbergh Early Childhood Education, Sperreng and Truman middle schools, and Lindbergh High School, have raised $2,754 for Make-A-Wish this year through a Disney Dress Up Day fundraiser on March 12 and other fundraising efforts. Make-A-Wish alum and Kennerly fifth-grader Anna Stetzel kicked off the fundraising efforts with $1,500 she made by selling handmade crafts at the school’s fall boutique. The Crestwood-Sunset Hills Kiwanis Club also donated to the effort. More events are planned to reach the Kennerly K-Kids' goal of raising $5,000 to grant a Disney World Wish for a local patient.
