Three Flyers Receive National Merit Semifinalist Status
Sept. 22, 2023
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently announced that three Lindbergh High School students have been named semifinalists in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program. Approximately 16,000 students earned the honor nationwide.
National Merit Semifinalists are high school seniors who show exceptional skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Lindbergh’s honorees include Liam Goddard, Alec West and Cindy Yao.
These students entered the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents fewer than 1% of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest scoring individuals in each state. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,140 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million that will be offered next spring. About 95 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
LHS Principal Dr. Eric Cochran said that he is proud and excited to have these three students representing Lindbergh High School.
“Becoming a National Merit Semifinalist takes hard work and dedication,” Dr. Cochran said. “These three students showed the aptitude and ability to learn at the highest level and were recognized for their successes. They represent Lindbergh High School’s best and brightest, and have made the school community proud, including their teachers and families.”
National Merit Scholarship winners of 2024 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join nearly 375,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.
