Board Approves Prop R Storm Shelter at LHS
Oct. 15, 2020
Lindbergh High School Prop R construction progress continues to move forward, following Board of Education approval on Oct. 13 for a bid package to construct a new storm shelter/gymnasium. This new structure on the LHS campus will create space not only for student recreation, but also for safety in the event of severe weather.
The board voted 7-0 to approve Bid Package 3 LHS Storm Shelter/Gym to the lowest responsible bidder complying with the terms of the letting, which was Wachter, Inc.’s bid of $3,636,000. This approval also directs district administration to proceed with contract negotiations for the project.
LHS construction is well under way now, with active building taking place across campus. The bid package approved in June 2020 includes construction of a new three-story structure that will connect existing buildings on the high school campus, in addition to renovation and remodeling work in existing buildings. This work is scheduled for completion in January 2023.
Construction of a central utility building, demolition of the math building and high school main office, installation of utilities, additional exterior site improvements, and asbestos abatement began in summer 2020.
The final bid package work is scheduled to begin in January 2023 and will include demolition of the current auditorium and 300s/400s building, and resurfacing and reconfiguration of on-campus parking areas.
Lindbergh voters overwhelmingly approved Prop R, a $105 million no-tax-rate-increase bond issue to revitalize the Lindbergh High School campus and create districtwide safety equity, in April 2019. More than 77 percent of voters cast ballots in favor of Prop R, which required 57.15 percent for approval.
