Students Recognized at National Journalism Conference
Long Fifth-Graders Give Back to Community
Sappington Hosts First Archery Tournament
Close to 60 students from across the Lindbergh district participated in the first Lindbergh Schools Archery Tournament at Sappington Elementary School on Nov. 17. Lindbergh Activities sponsored the inaugural event, which was open to students in grades 4-12. In all, 57 students competed, with the following archers taking home medals:
5K Highlights Seasons for Girls on the Run
More than 30 students at Sappington Elementary School participated in Girls on the Run, a national program that encourages girls to be healthy and confident using a curriculum that incorporates running. The students’ twice-weekly training during the fall semester culminated in a 5K race on Nov. 14 in downtown St. Louis, with two Sappington students winning high honors. Francesca Kohrs finished 10th in her age group and Mia Dirksen finished first in her age group and 17th out of 6,000 runners.

Rotary Names Student of the Month
The Crestwood-Sunset Hills Rotary Club recently recognized Lindbergh High School senior Kate Fee as its December student of the month. Kate is president of the LHS Interact Club, which is a student service club affiliated with Rotary. She carries a 4.78 GPA and ranks third in her class of 476. Kate is also involved in National Honor Society, Pre-Med club, Running Club, National English Honor Society, Link Crew, Environmental club and basketball. Outside of school, she volunteers at the St. Louis Crisis Nursery and CHADS.
Sappington Staff Earn ADA Certification
Sappington Elementary School teachers Chris Thomson, Samantha Gatzmeyer, Daren Wolf and Jillian Skouby recently completed training in accordance with the policies of the American Diabetes Association, in order to become Trained Diabetes Personnel. ADA Trained Diabetes Personnel have a basic understanding of the disease and know who to contact in an emergency. They are also trained in student-specific routine and emergency care. Sappington Nurse Le Ann Barrett provided the training.
Boy Scouts Update Long Elementary Sundial Garden
Boy Scout Troop 580 worked together earlier this fall to update the Sundial Garden at Long Elementary School, installing new benches and replacing old railroad ties. The scouts are former Long students and did the work as part of their Eagle Scout Project.
Students Recognized at National Journalism Conference
Two Lindbergh High School students were recognized for their outstanding work in the National Fall Journalism Convention’s JEA Write-Off Contest. Senior Lisa Gray earned an Honorable Mention in Sports Photography for her photos shown below, and junior Savannah Sowell earned an Honorable Mention for Sports Writing. More than 2,003 students from around the country participated in the contest, with 712 receiving recognitions.
Long Fifth-Graders Give Back to Community
Long Elementary School fifth-grade students took to the streets Nov. 18 and raked leaves for eight families living in homes that neighbor the school. The students worked tirelessly to line the curbs with more than 50 full leaf bags! Retired physical education teacher Janet Capizzi organized the community service event.

- High School Division: Sean McNamara, Lindbergh, 257; Billy Driemeyer, Lindbergh, 250; Reilly Adams, Lindbergh, 226

Crestwood Elementary School also sponsored a Girls on the Run team this semester, which had great results in the areawide 5K race as well. Congratulations, girls!

The Crestwood Elks Lodge #2503 recently recognized Lindbergh High School seniors Mary Riley and Erik Kalfus as students of the month. Tom Sontheimer (left) from the Elks Lodge presented the students with a certificate of achievement, along with Principal Dr. Eric Cochran.
