Lindbergh Board Earns MSBA Governance Award

The Lindbergh Schools Board of Education is one of 24 Missouri school boards that received the Missouri School Boards’ Association’s 2018 Governance Team Award. Lindbergh’s Board of Education has received this prestigious honor seven times since 2010.
MSBA’s Governance Team Award is based on a board’s outstanding commitment to ongoing professional development in areas such as student achievement, school law and finance, board operations and contemporary issues in education. The award also recognizes the board’s commitment to regional and statewide leadership and to active participation in legislative advocacy for public schools and the students they serve. Only 24 of Missouri’s 518 public school boards received the award in 2018.
To receive this honor, members of Lindbergh’s Board of Education met the following criteria during the 2017-18 school year:
- All seven board members have completed the essential certification from MSBA. They include President Karen Schuster, Vice President Jennifer Miller, Secretary Mike Shamia, Treasurer Dr. Mike Tsichlis, Director Dr. Cathy Carlock Lorenz, Director Christy Watz and Director Matt Alonzo.
- The district is accredited.
- At least two board members have attained advanced certification from MSBA.
- At least one board member has attained the master’s level of certification.
- At least a quorum of the board and the superintendent attended the 2017 MSBA Annual Conference and a regional meeting during the past year.
- A representative attended the 2018 MSBA Legislative Forum.
- A board representative participated in MSBA’s Delegate Assembly.
In addition to the 2018 Governance Team Award, Miller and Tsichlis were recognized for achieving both advanced and master’s certification, while Schuster and Watz were honored for earning master’s certification.
Board members achieving advanced certification must complete 12 hours of training, read two books related to school board service, attend periodic MSBA meetings and write a reflection paper relating their study to their board service.
Those achieving master’s certification must meet additional requirements of at least 12 more hours of certified board member credit, read two additional books related to school board services, attend at least two MSBA meetings within the year and write another reflection paper that connects the subjects they have studied to the governance practices of the school district they serve.
