Sappington Students Collect Pennies for Patients
Sappington Elementary School students celebrated a series of spirit days in March to collect $2,550.75 in change for the school’s Pennies for Patients fundraiser. Students brought nickels to wear PJs on Feb. 28, then donated dimes to wear their clothing inside out or backwards on March 4. On March 6, kids collected quarters to wear their favorite hats to school, and the finale was March 7, when they could pay $1 to bring their favorite gum.

Since 1994, millions of dollars have been raised in pennies and other spare change by more than 10 million elementary, middle and high school students throughout the country. The funds collected benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Truman Middle School’s Interact Club hosted a food drive March 2-6, collecting 441 pounds of food for St. Louis Area Foodbank. The “Flyers Fighting Hunger” food drive will provide 360 meals for the community!
Cupcake Sale Helps Animals in Need
The Crestwood Elementary School Flyers' Club students baked, decorated and sold cupcakes, raising $191 to benefit Five Acres Animal Shelter. Five Acres is a no-kill animal shelter located in St. Charles. The cupcakes were sold to students, families and staff at Crestwood, and were offered in unique flavors such as Thin Mint, Double Chocolate, Vanilla Strawberry and Shamrock Surprise.
Sappington Elementary School will become the third Lindbergh elementary with a buddy bench, thanks to the huge amount of caps collected by students, staff and families. Earlier this month, fifth grade students worked with Margaret Lilly from Saint Louis County Department of Health to sort through 20 large trash bags full of caps to separate the different kinds of plastic. The school has ordered two benches with their collection, and should have them in time for warmer spring weather.
Grant Funds Standing Desks at Long
Students are standing tall at Long Elementary School, thanks to a Spirit of Lindbergh Teacher Grant from the Lindbergh Schools Foundation. Funding for the “Standing Up for Our Students” grant provides students with stand up desks, an alternative to traditional classroom seating that get students up and moving in order to improve attention, on-task behavior, alertness and classroom engagement. Jennifer Albers, who wrote the grant, said research shows that these areas can be positively affected when students are given the opportunity to stand throughout the school day.
Crestwood Creates Classroom Makerspace
Second-graders at Crestwood Elementary School are exploring circuitry, coding and more, thanks to a Spirit of Lindbergh Teacher Grant that is funding materials for a Makerspace in Megan Vallis’ classroom. With the new materials, students can code, build electronic circuits, tinker with Tinker Toys, build with GoldieBlox and Legos, and work with Makey Makeys.
