Teacher Featured in National Literacy Magazine
June 26, 2018
Dressel Elementary School fifth-grade teacher Sarah Valter’s article, “The Need for Narrative Nonfiction,” recently was published in the May/June 2018 issue of Literacy Today magazine. The article focuses on the value or reading aloud nonfiction picture books in middle grades.
Valter explains that reading nonfiction to students in her classroom supports readers in many ways. Students build interest in a wide range of topics and experience increased engagement. In addition, teachers who practice regular nonfiction reading support cross-curricular instruction, transcending the boundaries of science, social studies and match concepts.
