Sappington Teacher Visits High Tech High
November 19, 2017
Sappington Elementary School second-grade teacher Elizabeth Hughes recently visited San Diego, the home of High Tech High, a project-based learning school featured in the education documentary "Most Likely to Succeed." Hughes’ trip was funded by a professional development grant from the Innovative Technology Education Fund, a St. Louis foundation that empowers educators to embrace innovative learning projects and use technology in creative ways that promote excellence in education.
Hughes and two of her classmates from Maryville University visited High Tech Elementary, High Tech Middle and High Tech High at the Chula Vista campus on Sept. 15. She observed how classrooms were set up, what projects lined the hallways, and how Project Based Learning took place at the elementary level. Hughes and her colleagues also ate lunch with high school teachers, visited with fifth-grade students, and observed classes.
"They were so delighted to have us," said Hughes. "I walked away with a lot of knowledge about how to get started with project based learning."
