Truman Teachers Win $10,000 Emerson Grant
June 15, 2018
Truman Middle School science teacher Melissa Nussbaum and library media specialist Megan Vallis recently received a $10,000 Emerson Gold Star Grant to purchase Google Expeditions virtual reality kits. Emerson presented $60,000 in Gold Star Grants to teachers at six local schools this year, to fund special projects in their classrooms. The grants are awarded annually by the company through a competitive application process open to past recipients of the Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award.
The Teamwork Grant awarded to Nussbaum and Vallis will fund Google Expeditions virtual reality kits, giving students an opportunity to explore and investigate places they’ve never been, such as inside of a cell, the deep sea, or even outer space. VR in the classroom will prepare students for a technology-rich future and engage them in shared experiences, extending beyond the physical barriers of the classroom. Truman Middle School will also receive a $5,000 companion grant from Emerson.
The Emerson Excellence in Teaching Awards program, sponsored by Emerson, annually recognizes more than 100 educators in the St. Louis metropolitan area who are examples of excellence in their field. Recipients are selected by the chief administrators of their school districts or educational institutions and become eligible to apply for a Gold Star Grant. Emerson and its Charitable Trust fund the Excellence in Teaching and Gold Star Grant programs.
