Sara Marrone Named PE Teacher of the Year
October 19, 2015
Truman Middle School physical education teacher Sara Marrone has been named the 2015 Missouri State Middle School Physical Educator of the Year by the Missouri Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
Marrone is beginning her sixth year of teaching physical education, and her second year at Truman. During her short time at Truman, Principal Dr. Tara Sparks said Marrone has been able to seamlessly mix physical education and health curriculum, build relationships with students and advocate for her profession.
“Sara possesses a high level of energy, motivation, personal responsibility, and instructional understanding to represent health and fitness teachers,” Sparks said.
Marrone’s students say she is a good listener and has an ability to help individuals find their areas of strength and succeed.
“She teaches the importance of teamwork to her classes,” seventh-grader Perpetua Smith said. “She’ll help you out when you need it and make sure that you are healthy and fit.”

Students in Marrone’s class are writing SMART goals to achieve their fitness focus of the year, and Marrone is hosting a fitness fair for families during student-led parent-teacher conferences. Last year, her students researched, collaborated and created brain break videos for teachers to use in their classrooms. At her previous school, Marrone wrote a grant to incorporate technology into physical education, and she is initiating a similar campaign at Truman.
“My goal is to connect with kids, find out what motivates them, and give them the tools necessary to value and lead a healthy lifestyle,” Marrone said.Marrone will be recognized for her state award at the MOAHPERD state convention on Nov. 14. As Missouri’s Teacher of the Year, Marrone is now eligible for SHAPE America’s Central District Teacher of the Year honor, as well as National Teacher of the Year. Sappington Elementary School PE teacher Mary Driemeyer earned the Central District honor in 2011.
"This is a most significant honor for any of our members to achieve," said MOAHPERD President John Ponzar. "We are proud of Sara's accomplishments, and will be pleased to honor her for these achievements.”
