Builders Club Honors Students for Outstanding Service
Truman Middle School eighth-grader Abby Juedemann and Sperreng Middle School sixth-grader Katie Kult are the first recipients of the Hawkins Award, a recognition founded by the middle school Builders Club that recognizes students who show exceptional community service. Builders Club is a student branch of Kiwanis International.
The Hawkins Award memorializes 46-year Kiwanis member Ted Hawkins, who passed away earlier this year and spent his lifetime encouraging student community service. Hawkins was also a member of the Lindbergh Schools Board of Education from 1976-1989. The Hawkins Award will be presented four times a year at each middle school, and recipients are nominated by their teachers.
Kennerly Student’s Creations Benefit Make-A-Wish
Kennerly Elementary School fifth-grade student Anna Stetzel raised more than $1554 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation by selling handmade scarves, wrist warmers and prayer boxes at the annual Kennerly Fall Boutique on Nov. 8. Anna, who was born with a rare heart condition called Tetralogy of Fallot, now uses her talents to create her Anna B. Moo designs, the proceeds of which benefit other young patients. Last year she donated $1,000 to the Dallas Heart Center at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, where she receives treatment. Make-A-Wish is an organization that grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses.
LHS Anatomy Class Holds Successful Blood Drive
The human anatomy classes at Lindbergh High School coordinated a blood drive with the American Red Cross on Oct. 24 and collected more than 130 units of blood to help save lives. This is an annual event for the anatomy classes, and donors included teachers, parents, students, and administrators.
Kiwanis Student Organizations Give Back to District, Community
Students from Lindbergh High School Key Club and Sperreng and Truman middle school Builders Club teamed up with Crestwood-Sunset Hills Kiwanis Club members on Nov. 8 to clear invasive honeysuckle from an overgrown area behind Sperreng Middle School. About 20 volunteers gathered for the K Family Work Day to remove branches, rake leaves and clear the large area, which will allow for native trees and vegetation to grow next spring.
Lindbergh Builders Club members also collected more than 150 canned food items on Oct. 29, for Feed My People food pantry. Builders Club includes students from Truman and Sperreng middle schools.
